German Separable Verbs Explained — Prefix Jumps to End of Sentence
Separable verbs (trennbare Verben) are compound verbs where the prefix detaches and jumps to the end of the sentence. Aufmachen (to open) → "Ich mache die Tür auf." Anrufen (to call) → "Ich rufe dich an." Mitkommen (to come along) → "Ich komme mit." The prefix always goes to the absolute end. In infinitive form they're together; in conjugated sentences they split. This is one of the most distinctive features of German.
